The Fabric of the Swan

The Fabric of the Swan, 2019. Tulle, organza, silk, recycled fabric

Thelma Cluning

My work represents the water, wind drifts, currents, rain and mist, sand banks, remnants of fishing parties, schools of river species and the landforms that shape the river.

In layering fabric, I aim to reflect silt, sand, water, land, grasses and foliage to create an abstract impression of the influence and presence of the Swan River. Machine stitching is used to secure the layers and to add the visual elements that suggest weather patterns, currents and some habitation.
