Eliza’s Coat

Eliza’s Coat, 2019, green lightweight plastic vegetable bags

Meagan Howe

Eliza’s swimsuit is my inspiration. Her ‘Speedos’, invented in Australia by Alexander MacRae, a Scottish migrant; produced women’s swimsuits from his knitting mill modelled on the men’s swimsuits of the time.

Eliza’s coat is based on the 2,000 year old ‘bog coat’, a rectangle shape cut and stitched to form a simple garment. The fabric is knitted using yarn made from lightweight plastic bags, available in fruit and vegetable sections at most supermarkets.

Since January 2019, it has been illegal for any retailer in Western Australia to provide lightweight plastic shopping bags (35 microns or less).
